Yoga Asanas
There are forty eight important asanas demonstrated in the site. The
number of asanas are unlimited these are just glimpse to give readers an
idea about asanas. Each major asana has its variations and preparatory
practices that also prolong the list.

Uttanpadasana (leg raising pose):
good for
strengthening abs, lower back, digestive system, perineal muscles
and cures prolapse.
- Supta Pawanmuktasana (leg lock posture):
This asana loosens the spinal vertebra. It is very effective in
overcoming constipations and releasing wind form colon. Treats
impotence, sterility and menstrual disorders.
- Supta Udarakarshan (sleeping spinal stretch):
This practice
relieves tightness and tiredness especially in the lower back.
Abdominal and pelvic organs get toning action.
- Naukasana (boat pose):
It stimulates and
brings in order the muscular digestive, circulatory, nervous,
muscular and hormonal systems. Relieves nervous tension and bestows
profound relaxation.
- Udar karshanasan (intra abdominal pull):
This technique
alternately stretches and compresses the organs and muscles of
abdomen and thus cures the pertaining ailments.
- Adwasana (reversed dead man’s pose):
This practice is
recommended for people with slipped disc, stiff neck and stooping

relaxing sleeping position.
- Matsya kridasan (flapping fish):
This is a

remove constipation. By relaxing leg nerves it cures sciatic pain.
From thirteen weeks onwards during pregnancy lying on back may cause
pressure on major veins and block the circulation. In these kinds of
situations this is an ideal pose for relaxation or sleeping.
- Padmasana (lotus pose):
This posture exerts pressure to the lower spine which gives relaxing
effect on the nervous system. When practicner assumes this posture
the breath becomes slow, muscles-tension is minimized and blood
pressure is lowered considerably. The coccygeal and are sacral
nerves get toned as the normally descent amount of blood flow to the
legs is redirected to the abdominal area. This change also
stimulates the process of digestion.

- Veer asana (hero’s gesture):
This is one of easiest meditation poses which can be
sustained comfortably to long period of time. Unlike other
meditation postures the legs and hips are not rotated outwards,
rather the knees are brought to the center. This affects the pelvic
structure and stretches the outer rather than inner muscles of
thigh.
- Vajrasana (the pose of mental stability):
The body in this posture becomes upright and straight
without any effort thus it is considered to be one of important
poses for meditation. It awakens VAJRA NADI (this nadi is inside the
SUSUMNA NADI spread form coccygeal plexus to Solar plexus). It has
preventative value against hernia and helps to relieve piles too. It
decreases the flow of blood to genital organs and gives massage to
the nerve fibers which feed them, facilitating the treatment of
dilated testicles and hydrocele in male body. It assists women in
labour and helps eradicate menstrual disease.
- Vyaghrasana (tiger pose): This asana loosens the back and tones the spinal nerves, relieving
sciatica. It tones the female reproductive organs and is especially
useful after childbirth. Reduces weight form hips and thighs. This
asana emulates the stretching movement made by a tiger as it wakes
up from deep sleep.
- Shashankasana (rabbit pose):
Shashankasana
releases pressure on the discs by stretching back muscles and
separating individual vertebrae form each other. Function of adrenal
gland is assisted by this practice. It useful for women who have
underdeveloped pelvis. It leaves impact on the brain and eliminates
anger like negative emotions when performed with UJJAI pranayama.
- Ushtrasana (camel posture):
The backward
bending stretch in this posture relieves backache, lumbago, rounded
back and drooping shoulders. Regulates the thyroid gland.
- Supta vajrasana (sleeping thunderbolt):
The chest is expanded and stretched to its full
capacity, filling the lungs allowing the intake of more oxygen in
the system. It is advisable to be regularly done by those suffering
from asthma, bronchal and other lung diseases. It improves
creativity and enhances intelligence. This asana redirects sexual
energy to the brain for spiritual purposes. Note: it should not be
practiced with those having sacral ailments, sciatica, slipped disc
or knee complaints.
- Tadasana (palm tree pose):
This asana develops
a balance of mind and body. The stretch on the entire spine helps to
loosen it up, clear up congestion of the spinal nerves at the points
where they emerge from the spinal column. Tadasana pulls the rectus
abdomini muscles and is advised to be done by pregnant lady during
the first six months of pregnancy.

- Tiryak kati vrittasana (rotation while swaying pose): It
develops coordination and balance. The relaxation and swinging
movement induces a sense of lightness and can be done anytime of the
day to get rid off physical and mental tension.
- Drut utkatasan (dynamic energy act):
Helps to strengthen muscles of back and legs. If done properly will
prevent the occurrence of sciatica and slipped disc. Will alleviate
backache as well. Until the Achilles tendons have become supple
adequately, one might come on to toes while squatting.
- Dway kona asana (pose of tow angles):
This is for extending and energizing intraspinatus muscles, between
the shoulder blades and upper spine. It has characteristic effects

- Matsya asana (fish pose):

respiration hence greatly beneficial for asthma and bronchitis. It

- Baddha padmasana (locked lotus):

spiritual purpose.
- Kukkut asana (cockerel pose):
It loosens
stiffness of legs make them slim and give stability and balance. It
is a practice done in the process of kundalini awakening.
- Garbh asana (foetus pose):
Its one of valuable
techniques which regulates adrenal gland and clams the agitated
mind. People with uncontrollable anger should practice it at any
time of the day. It cures nervous disorders.
- Bhujang asana (cobra pose):
This asana can re establish the slipped disc, and keep the spine
flexible and healthy. Stiffness in the spine obstructs with nervous
impulses send from the brain to other parts of the body and vice
versa. This asana tones the uterus and ovaries, and therefore aids
to alleviate gynecological and menstrual problems. The secretion of
cortisone is maintained and thyroid gland is regulated.
- Vistarit bhujang asana (extended cobra):
The adrenal glands

- Vistarit shalabh asana (full locust):
The parasympathetic

good to parasympathetic outflow. It strengthens and tones the pelvic
organs, sciatic nerves and lower back, bestowing relief for those
with ailments like backache, sciatica, slipped disc, and long as the

- Dhanurasana (bow pose):
It helps to release
body tiredness by producing more cortisone. Pancreas gland is

- Chakrasana (wheel pose):
It invigorates sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. It
supplies oxygenated pure blood to the brain if held for about one to
tow minutes. It has effect on whole body health. Removes wrinkles
form the face and aligns the vertebral column.

- Gomukh asana (cow face posture):
Gomukh asana is
anti stress technique. It is the best posture for purposes of
relaxation if done at stretch ten minutes. That is why this is

- Shaithilyasana (relaxation pose):
This is preliminary asana for meditation poses. It should precede

- Paschim Uttanasan (back stretching pose):
It stretches
hamstring and muscles and increase flexibility in the hip joints.
Good for liver, pancreas, spleen, kidneys and adrenal glands. It
removes excess weight in this area and cures problems of uro-genital
system. For the cure of prolapse, menstrual diseases, colitis,
kidney disorders, sluggish liver and diabetes.
- Pad prasarit paschim Uttanasan (legs spread back
extension pose):
This is an essential forward bending practice. It provides extended
stretch to inner thigh muscles and the muscles between and under the
shoulder blades. The stretching effect is distributed throughout
both the upper and lower parts of the body.
- Yukt Sirshangusth Asana (Head - toe union pose):
Helps to reduce
extra fat around the waist. It is good stimulant to the nervous
system and appetite. People suffering from constipation and other
abdominal complaints should perform everyday. This provides lateral
stretch to the back and elasticizes hamstrings.
- Ardh matsyendrasana (half spinal twist):
It tones the nerves
of the spine, relieves lumbago, muscular spasm and makes the back
muscles supple. This practice reduces the tendency of adjoining
vertebrae to develop osteophytes. It regulates the secretion of
adrenaline. People suffering with cervical spondylitis, urinary
tract disorders, menstrual problems, colitis, sluggish peristalsis
of colon, sinusitis and bronchal ailments.

- Parivritti janu sirasana (spiraled head to knee pose):
This technique prepares one for long hours of sitting in meditation.
It massages and gives good stretch to each side of abdomen and
chest.
- Sarvangasana (shoulder stand):
In the final
position of this asana chest is pressed strongly with the chin and
thyroid gland is stimulated. It boosts the whole endocrine system
and good for various digestive system disorders. Practice of
Sarvangasana influences greatly the reproductive, nervous and
circulatory systems. This is one of significant asanas and used in
yoga therapy for the treatment of diabetes, asthma, prolapse,
thyroid problems, menstrual ailments and menopause. People suffering
with cervical spondylitis, high blood pressure, thrombosis or toxic
blood. During the pregnancy and menstruation this asana should not
be performed.
- Hal asana (plough pose):
This asana need to
be incorporated in daily practice routine by people having
hepatitis, asthma, urinary track problems, bronchitis and menstrual
disorders. It balances the body’s metabolic rate and raises the
immunity. Tones the spinal nerve through which improves the
operation of sympathetic nervous system. Kidney and liver function
is also improved remarkably.
- Sirshasana (head stand):
this is one of very
popular yoga techniques. The pituitary gland and the brain is
supplied with adequate blood supply and which how it revitalizes the
whole body and mind. It is a best stress and anxiety reducing
techniques. It does rectification of glandular disorders and cures
sexual diseases. The weight of the organs in the abdomen goes to

- Padangusthasana (tip toe pose):

in muscles and nerves.
- Baka dhyanasana (meditating crane pose):

of body balance. Strengthens the arms and wrists. This asana
requires more coordination and than muscular strength.
- DWI hast bhujangasana (two handed cobra):
It provides
stimulation and massage to visceral organs and helps pancreas to
secret the insulin as per the requirement of the body.
- Dhanu akarshan (archer’s pose):
Good for sexual
disorders and hydrocele. In general it helps the get rid off the
tension of back and neck. This practice can be done at any time
during the yoga program. People suffering from dislocation of hip
joint and disc prolapse should doctor’s consent before undertaking
this practice.
- Pristh asana (back stretching pose):
This asana should
be practiced followed by standing or forward bending practice.

- Mayur asana (peacock pose):
This asana should
never be practiced before any inverted asana because it may direct
excess toxins to the brain. Pregnant women should not attempt this
practice. It is prohibited for those who have hernia, heart
complaints, duodenal or duodenal ulcer. It accelerates the
elimination of toxins form the blood. Assists the removal the skin
problems like dermatitis and boils. Mayurasana develops harmony in
endocrine system. Treats the flatulence, diabetes, kidney and liver
sluggishness.
